2023 Yamaha MT-07 Specs, Top Speed, Price, & Reviews

MT-07 advancements are admittedly modest this year. 2021’s key upgrades enjoyed distinctive bodywork, natural ergonomics, compact LED lights, and braking components; the 2023 ones merely take these while adding new full-color, 5-inch TFT display modes available in two switchable screen styles:

  • “Street” offers digital speedometers, gear selection info, and bar-style tachs.
  • “Touring” provides a diameter dual: digital speedometers (left) and circular tachometers (right).

Plus, the scooter design is armed with a new feature, Yamaha Motor Connect, which allows users to utilize the brand’s Yamaha Y-Connect navigation app at a new level. Thanks to Bluetooth smartphone connectivity, basic functions like text info and calls are fully shown on the brand-new screen modes.

Ride data (ride logs, fuel economy, etc.) also become available on the TFT screen. Those who do not mind spending extra can access pre-wiring options for quick shift systems as well.

But besides this minor updated styling, the bike’s key attributes stay the same. We barely spot any difference in its complete details – from the braking and rear suspension setups to the compact 689cc liquid, parallel twin.

Engine

Advanced Twin-Cylinder Engine

The MT-07 features the compact 689cc liquid-cooled, inline twin cylinder, DOHC CP2 engine with fuel injection. The fun and characterful CP2 engine provides both outstanding low- to mid-range torque and strong high-rpm pulling power. Fuel injection settings are optimized for seamless, linear throttle response characteristics, even when the throttle is slightly open at low rpm.

Compact Stacked Transmission

The six-speed transmission “stacks” the input/output shafts in a triangular layout. Keeping the overall engine size shorter from front-to-back, the placement in the frame is optimized for outstanding weight balance. The transmission ratios bring out the best of the low- to mid-speed torque with excellent response characteristics to reduce the need for frequent shifts.

Crossplane Crankshaft Concept

The two-cylinder engine features Yamaha’s Crossplane Crankshaft Concept 270-degree crank that provides linear torque development in response to the rider’s throttle input. Offering excellent rider-machine communication, the CP2 engine is also light, slim and compact.

Midship Exhaust System

By placing the muffler low in the frame and as close to the center of the machine as possible, the bike’s mass is centralized for improved all around handling.

Offset Cylinder Block

The CP2 engine shifts its cylinder bores slightly forward, towards the exhaust side which reduces piston-to-cylinder wall friction, resulting in more power and improved fuel economy.

Refined Fuel Injection

From the open roads to the urban sprawl, refined electronic fuel injection settings deliver a smooth throttle response for enhanced riding enjoyment. The system delivers outstanding torque in the low- and mid-rpm range, exciting acceleration in the upper rpm range, along with linear and seamless throttle response across the entire rev range.

Quality Details: Performance and Handling

2023 Yamaha MT-07 Top Speed

Feed the gears consistently, and you will eventually reach approximately 133.6 MPH (not unlike its previous versions). However, the bike’s essential elements barely offer any protection, so play safe and make small elbows-in attempts to avoid accidents: above 100 MPH, holding on will be a tough struggle.

Plus, do not forget that MT-07 is just a naked bike at the end of the day. Your maximum engine speed varies depending on several crucial factors, such as:

  • Range of rider sizes
  • Tucking technique efficiency
  • Good or unfavorable conditions

For maximum performance, it’s recommended to avoid revving out close or at the redline; otherwise, your acceleration time will be severely affected. Furthermore, your best bet on stock motors is to change the first three gears between 9700 to 9800 RPM – and the fourth and fifth to 9500 RPM.

Acceleration Rates

Our MT-07 proves a runaway market leader, enjoying good acceleration under 100 MPH. Its acceleration performance matches most higher-end, power assist bikes and even puts some sports cars to shame.

Unfortunately, minor 2023 MT-07 styling upgrades fail to improve its aerodynamic power; which means, similar to previous versions, you can never let yourself get wild beyond 100 MPH.

  • Our 60 MPH test:

After some attempts, our MT-07 accelerated to 60 MPH (from 0 MPH, mind you) within just 3.7 seconds. We would have done it much faster – had it not been for the time-consuming gear changes from first to second.

We also noted the bike’s constant need for wheelies; while the launching becomes way more fun, you may find it challenging to hit optimum ETs.

  • Our 100 MPH test:

8.14 seconds was what we needed to accelerate to 100 MPH – a remarkable achievement for this motorcycle lineup (though again, it isn’t news; the 2021 version could do the same).

With a great, aligned launch, it could sprint a quarter-mile below twelve seconds; our best record was 11.973 seconds, scoring a terminal speed of 115.8 MPH. Not half-bad for a naked model considered by many as beginner-friendly!

Dipping below 12 is the absolute optimum for lightweight riders, a perfect solution for shifting and launching. Meanwhile, experienced riders of average weight should do well in mid-high twelves at approximately 110 MPH in terminal speed.

Braking

2021 MT-07’s front brake discs were updated to 298mm – which the 2023 version still keeps. The Nissin supplies the rear and Advics the front braking setups. Such a big rotor not only generates more braking power but also allows for less heat build-up.

For a motorbike of this class, MT-07’s disc brakes are everything one could ask for: sufficient stopping power, yet not too immediate that your front end and traction control might be overwhelmed. ABS comes standard, which is a huge selling point, as other brands deem this crucial add-on optional and require more bucks for its installation.

Handling and Cornering

The 2023-model Yamaha MT-07 uses steel-double, tubular backbone frames with its two-cylinder engine. The 41mm conventional KYB forks are non-adjustable, while KYB mono shocks can be adjusted for rebound and spring preload.

Aggressive styling and adventurous rides will not be a good fit for these budget-oriented suspension performances. Nevertheless, they are more than enough for everyday bike trips: the nimble motorbike carries its 406 pounds of wet weight pretty well with a well-balanced gravity center and low accessible seat height (31.7 inches).

These measurements also translate to smooth corners, although the wheels might roll off to a certain degree; after all, its orientation for softer rides may make your turning attempts a bit shaky.

2023 MT-07: A Brief Review

Overall, the 2023 MT07 is a class leader, paving outstanding torque and exceptional feeling of control.

Its barely-changing engine over the years is actually a positive sign: Yamaha Motor Corp nailed the premium materials and design so spectacularly in 2014 that there was barely any need for upgrades. Seamless throttle response, great linear response, lovely gearbox action; no wonder it has quickly become a hit!

One thing, though: when we switched to chassis in our test, some features became a little bothersome.

For one, the non-adjustable fork is softly-sprung, plunging quickly to the stroke’s bottom at the slightest stroke of forceful push.

It can only work with sedate, leisure cruising. Just experiment with the damping circuits and adjustable preload shocks; over time, you will spot a perfect setup that works best for you and your rider confidence. After all, the 5.1 inches of rear and front suspension travel ensures every range of riding styles is fully-supported.

Also, any trip longer than 60 minutes resulted in our sore back – which the pretty-hard seats were to blame for. If your height is over six feet, the tapered and adjustable handlebar controls are the keys to enhanced riding enjoyment, enabling more flexible riding positions.
